Dr. Betty Wilkinson. PhD. |
Dear Madam or Sir:
I am writing to recommend Jacob Davis as an English
teacher. When he was a student at the University of Mobile, I taught him
in four English courses, and he exhibited traits that I think would make
him an excellent teacher. He is a kind person with a sensitivity to
others. In my classes students discuss the literature they've read
freely. Occasionally, a pupil will get angry at someone with a different
viewpoint. Jacob never did that. He listened to what his classmates had
to say even if it was apparent that he didn't agree. Such a respectful
attitude I'm sure carries over to the classroom. Accompanying being kind
is a patience with others, a trait I know from my own teaching is
necessary for effective learning. That does not, however, mean Jacob is
milquetoast. He is grounded within himself and has a moral sensibility
that he is willing to stand up for, if necessary.
Another quality that will make Jacob a good teacher
is his keen intelligence. In my eight years of teaching at the University
of Mobile, I would place Jacob among the ten most intelligent students I
have encountered. I discovered that he reads all types of material on his
own, everything from novels to physics' theories to philosophy. Such
wide-ranging knowledge made his comments in class both interesting and
thoughtful, and I know these traits must carry over into the classroom.
In fact, I remember a student staying after class in an upper-level course
in order to share with me, "I just love it when Jacob talks! I could
listen to him all day. He's so articulate and interesting."
I think you will find Jacob an engaging colleague
and an outstanding teacher. If you have any questions, please feel free
to contact me at email

Sincerely,
Betty Wilkinson, Ph.D.
